The new VW Golf 8 has recently become available and the suspension manufacturer KW automotive already has three different coilover kits in its product range. KW has currently completed the development and tests for the first of its Golf Mk8 coilover suspension kits. All three coilover kits are made of stainless steel struts in Germany. The KW Variant 3 even features stainless steel rear damper housings. Within the scope of the parts report, the KW Variant 1, Variant 2, and Variant 3 feature a continuously adjustable maximum lowering of up to 60 millimeters.
The three KW coilover kits from the suspension manufacturer's Street Performance product range differ in the damper technologies used. While the Variant 1 has no tunable KW shocks, the Variant 2 allows the rebound damping to be adjusted with 16 clicks, and the Variant 3 even features separate adjustment of the rebound with 16 clicks and compression forces with 12 clicks. The KW Variant 3 coilover suspension has become the globally most sold coilover suspension kit of the manufacturer due to its separate compression and rebound adjustment and the complex multi-valve technology.
The reason for this is the suspension setup used by KW in conjunction with the patented KW multi-valve technology in the KW V3. Despite a maximum and infinitely variable lowering of 60 millimeters with the KW Variant 3, the new Golf 8 has a sporty and harmonious everyday driving behavior. KW’s setup philosophy for all of its suspensions in the so-called Street Performance category is a predialed setup that is as firm as necessary and as comfortable as possible. Whether in everyday life on country roads or poorly developed side roads, speedy travel on the motorway, or holiday driving over mountain passes, with a KW coilover suspension kit the road holding of the new VW Golf 8 is further enhanced.
Within the scope of the technical parts approval for legal street use, all three KW coilover kits available for the VW Golf 8 enable continuous variable lowering from 35 to 60 millimeters on both axles. While the stepless lowering range on the front axle is adjusted on the stainless-steel struts via the trapezoidal thread and the spring perch, the lowering on the rear axle is adjusted via a so-called height adjustment perch. Due to its multi-link rear axle, the VW Golf 8, like its current predecessors, does not have suspension struts. The dampers and suspension spring are separate, and the lowering can then be adjusted using the KW spring perch included.
For example, Golf 8 drivers for whom this KW Variant 3 basic preset setup maybe too comfortable, they can further adjust the damping to their individual requirements utilizing the low-speed compression stage, which can be set with twelve clicks, and the low-speed rebound stage, which can be set separately with 16 clicks. In short, the rebound stage is responsible for connecting the body to the road, while the compression stage supports the entire body.
The damping forces are adjusted directly by hand on the shocks. Also, the KW Variant 2 coilover suspension kit features adjustable dampers. Although in contrast to the KW Variant 3, only the low-speed rebound forces can be adjusted with 16 clicks in the Variant 2. The KW Variant 1 coilover suspension kit has no adjustable shocks, which means that the KW suspension manufacturer's preset damper can no longer be adjusted.
Since KW work’s with pre-configured high-speed valves for the compression and rebound stages as well as two adjustable low-speed damper valves in the Variant 3, why a VW Golf Mk8 with a KW Variant 3 also handles a few nuances more comfortably than, for example, a KW Variant 1 or KW Variant 2. The three KW coilover suspension kits Variant 1, Variant 2, and Variant 3 are now available for all VW Golf 8 with front-wheel drive. The KW DDC plug&play and the KW Clubsport coilover suspension for the VW Golf will also be released shortly.
