A Comprehensive Comparison of Coilover Suspensions
The factory suspension
Compared to the E30, the BMW E36 boasts a far more advanced rear axle design and near-perfect weight distribution. This results in more neutral handling, greater driving stability and enhanced comfort straight from the factory. However, after decades of relentless use, the stock suspension becomes softer and dampens less precisely. This results in increased body roll. KW coilover kits offer great potential for restoring the car’s originally agile handling characteristics achieving significantly greater driving precision for both street and track use.
KW V1
The KW V1 coilover suspension is the entry-level solution for anyone who wants to experience the E36 with noticeably greater precision and a lower ride height without having to deal with complicated adjustments. Depending on the body style and engine configuration, the continuously adjustable lowering ranges from 40 to 80 mm on the front axle and 30 to 60 mm on the rear axle for Sedan, Coupe, Convertible, Touring, and Compact models with base engine configurations. For the M3 variants, the lowering range is 30 to 60 mm on both axles. The KW V1 is particularly well-suited for drivers who want more cornering stability and a more cohesive look in everyday driving without altering the E36’s fundamental character.

INOX LINE: High-quality stainless steel casing
The struts of KW coilover suspensions are made of high-quality stainless steel, making them rustproof. This long-lasting corrosion resistance is known as the INOX Line.
Composite spring disc
The height-adjustable KW spring plate is made from a resistant and friction-optimized polyamide composite material with a stainless steel insert. In contrast to anodized aluminum adjustable spring plates, the polyamide composite material prevents possible oxidation.
Trapezoidal thread
Thanks to our friction-optimized trapezoidal thread, you can easily adjust the vehicle lowering to your liking. Due to the protection-resistant thread, you can still adjust the lowering with millimeter precision even years after installation.

Does the H license plate remain valid with a coilover suspension?
Yes, that is generally possible. “Contemporary modifications” are defined as modifications that were common within the first ten years after the vehicle’s initial registration. This includes original parts, aftermarket parts, or tuning parts, as well as faithful replicas with a current certification. Since KW suspensions has been manufacturing coilover kits since the 1990s, corresponding comparative reports are available. If you want to play it safe, a KW Classic Line suspension might be the right choice for you.
Which coilover suspension is compatible with the E36?
The choice depends on the intended use: The KW V1 is ideal for everyday driving. Our Belgian customer, Niels, also chose the V1 for his E36. For DIY enthusiasts looking for fine-tuning, there’s the KW V2. If you want to combine country driving with comfort, go for the KW V3. For track days with street legality, the KW V3 Clubsport is the right choice; professional motorsports require a KW Racing variant.
How much can the BMW E36 be lowered with a KW coilover suspension?
Depending on the product line and body style, the continuously adjustable lowering range for street suspension kits (KW V1 through KW V3) is between 30 and 80 mm at the front and 30 to 60 mm at the rear. The KW V3 Clubsport allows for up to 80 mm, depending on the body style and engine configuration. There is no standard specification for racing suspension kits.
Does the E36 suspension also fit the BMW E46?
No, it doesn't. The BMW E36 and the BMW E46 use different body platforms and axle designs. A direct suspension swap between the two model series is not intended, and we strongly advise against it. In our online store, you’ll find all available coilover kits for the BMW E46.
